It happens every year. A prominent contestant makes his brilliant debut in the Strictly Ballroom and his life changes. And we’re not just talking about the beautiful costumes. It is as if the famous glitter ball had a magical, hypnotic effect.

Good Morning Britain’s 43-year-old political editor Ranvir Singh can vouch for it. She’s one of the lucky ones who, after five weeks, is still living in the star-studded parallel universe that is BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing. On the planet, strictly speaking, you literally spend your days in the hands of a professional dancer surrounded by sequins.

« It’s totally surreal, » said Ranvir. « I don’t feel like me when I’m on stage. It takes getting used to. «

Given that she has already topped the leaderboard, Ranvir could have a few more weeks to get used to it – which could take them to the finals.

Ranvir, who lives with her eight-year-old son Tushaan from her marriage to ex-husband Ranjeet and her new puppy Shmizzles, tells her so far strict story.

The TV star says, « I feel very, very happy to be part of the show. But it’s a very strange feeling to stand in front of the judges and hear their comments and results. I can’t believe it’s my life sometimes. «

Ranvir raved about her Italian dance partner, with whom her chemistry was even noticed by her GMB colleagues: « Giovanni is so incredible that I don’t have to be sensational. He sizzles all by himself. It doesn’t matter if I’m in the room or not, it sizzles away. The dances are about being romantic and of course we have to convince them.

« You must be a game to participate in Strictly. You can’t do things half-heartedly. I admit it doesn’t come easy. You need to break down some of your own barriers and do things that may feel embarrassing at first.

« It’s very intimate, » she added. « Then your face is right in her face. It takes some getting used to. «

Ranvir, who announced that she broke up with her husband after appearing on the show, says Strictly came at the right time for her.

« Sometimes in life you feel like you’re going against the grain. And then something changes out of nowhere and everything works out.

« If I were hit by the curse, it would be a bloody miracle. Oh my god that would be fun. Most dancers were born in 1990 or something. I am old enough to be your mother. It’s very optimistic and polite that anyone would think I was going to be hit by the curse. «

« I’ve always struggled with body image. Before I started Strictly I was a bit of a yo-yo with my weight and I was always on the scales. But dancing has helped me relate to my body in new ways. I haven’t thought about dress sizes, calories, or my weight in weeks. «

« It’s no longer about the weight, but about the fact that I feel safe in my skin. I walk differently and hold myself differently. «

But with the shine comes the not so glamor, Ranvir revealed: « There is always a pain. And I wore slippers under my desk at GMB because my ankle balls are so sore. Strictly speaking, it’s an extreme physical experience. In order to do this justice, you have to make a decision and commit yourself to training. It’s a bit like Bear Grylls, but with sequins and a ballroom. You’re also a working single mom.

« They say if you want a job done right, ask a busy mom. We learned the foxtrot dance in two days. I work well under pressure. A deadline ahead might make some people sick and nervous, but I thrive in that situation. Don’t get me wrong, there is an element of fear and nervousness right before I go on stage. But the difference is that instead of shrinking into a tiny ball, I stand up.

« I can handle it, that’s my job – to present on live television. At least I could put that on the table, because otherwise I had nothing else to offer Giovanni, the poor fellow. «
