David Fincher’s latest Mank will be released on April 4. Premiere on Netflix December. For a director known for his cerebral, dark thrillers, this is a considerable departure. Rather than commenting on the modern psyche, it harks back to Old Hollywood and is an ode to the American film industry of the 1930s and 1940s.

As one of the most talented filmmakers working in Hollywood today, Fincher may have made few films in his long career, but usually he is what he does. Before you watch Mank, here is a ranking of all the films he has made so far.

It must have been very difficult for a young fincher to make a franchise film after filmmakers like Ridley Scott and James Cameron made their names for themselves. There have also been reports of heavy studio interference. Since then, Fincher has broken Alien 3. The film is bad, but not a complete catastrophe. It just doesn’t come close to the first two installments.

This film was made by David Fincher after Seven, but it had no special features. It was still a well-assembled home invasion thriller and was carried by Jodie Foster’s appearance.

This Michael Douglas film is about an investment banker (Douglas) who received a gift from his brothers. The gift is a voucher for a game from a seedy company called Consumer Recreation Services (CRS). . The game seems fun at first, but it gets more and more dangerous. The game is a gripping thriller.

This Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett star is about a man who ages in reverse, and of course that creates a lot of problems. Like Mank, this film was quite different from other Fincher films in its sentimental tone. Far from being the best he has ever done, it was still an enjoyable experience.

In Gone Girl, based on Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name, the story and perspective shift about halfway, and the rotation acts like a sharp blow to the head with a corresponding effect (almost). David Fincher somehow managed to portray this downright literary twist very well on screen. The whole thing leaves you guessing to the end which is also making things restless. A brilliant film.

Based on Stieg Larsson’s novel of the same name, the film is about a jumble of murder, murders and enforced disappearances. It poses as a mere thriller and slowly reveals its real face – that of a thriller with substantial political and social commentary. Both Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are stellar in this film.

Based on the book of the same name by Chuck Palahanuik, everything in the Fight Club revolves around masculinity, or at least our understanding of it. The comment is ambiguous and we’re still not sure if it supports this ugliest, most violent kind of manhood or if it is an indictment against manhood. Either way, Fight Club is a solid film. The film is also somehow better than the book it draws its material from. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton deliver the best of their careers.

Zodiac is based on the crimes of the infamous Zodiac killer and the nationwide hunt to bring him to justice. The movie could easily have walked around with so many characters and threads, but it keeps the viewer’s attention right through to the end. The mostly frenetic pace sometimes relaxes a little, as if you have a little room to breathe. The era is brilliantly evoked with little things that few will notice.

Only David Fincher (and Aaron Sorkin) could have turned the hassle of starting a social network into an exciting affair. After all, it should have been boring. Just a few nerds who think and come up with ideas, a brilliant but socially inept man who develops a system to rate the women in his college on the « sharpness » scale. But the script and direction made this one of Fincher’s best films.

Fincher’s grand finale: Seven see Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman team up to meet a murderer who kills people according to the Seven Deadly Sins of Christianity.
