Black Friday shoppers at Galeries d’Anjou in east Montreal had to be evacuated after one or more canisters containing an « irritating gas » were opened during a fight, police said.
Just before 19 p. m, two groups « got into an argument » in the mall, said Montreal police spokesman Raphael Bergeron.
It turned out that one of the people involved in the fight had used some type of noxious gas that resembled tear gas, although Bergeron said he wasn’t yet sure what the substance was or how many canisters were used.
Bergeron said he didn’t know how many people were in the mall at the time – there are capacity and distancing rules in place, but sales have still been strong this year as other Black Friday shoppers queued on the streets of Montreal earlier during the day.
The police arrived, along with firefighters who « had to clean the air ». « There are still no suspects, » said Bergeron.
