Western Australia will continue to « set its own course » on border policy with Prime Minister Mark McGowan refusing to set a date or milestone for reopening after Victoria.
Mr McGowan’s comments on Wednesday came as every other state returned to Melbourne, where the virus was, by definition, « eliminated » on Friday.

Mr. McGowan previously claimed that WA’s threshold to contemplating reopening in another state was 28 days with no community carryover case. In the past few days, however, he made it clear that reaching this milestone is not an automatic trigger.
« We will get advice on the 28 day mark [with Victoria] if there are no additional cases, but the other things you consider in other states are sewage tests, their border agreements . . . and their testing regime, « he said.
« People from Victoria can come here right now, they just need to be quarantined and I haven’t heard any complaints about this. «
Health Secretary Roger Cook reiterated Mr McGowan’s comments, saying WA had « set its own course » in its response to the virus.
« We are planning our own way through the world and have been very successful so far, » he said.
WA was born on 14. Reopened November for the Northern Territory, South Australia, Queensland, the ACT and Tasmania.
Travelers from Victoria and New South Wales are also allowed to travel to WA from this date, but must self-quarantine for 14 days.
The border with South Australia was opened on Nov.. Closed again on November 11, following an outbreak triggered by a hotel security officer contracted the virus from a returning traveler.
Mr Cook admitted that the main risk of COVID-19 re-entry into the state was from hotel quarantine. There are currently 27 active cases being processed in WA.
« The number of people currently returning from overseas with positive cases is increasing, and I note that the South Australian government announced today that they would like people returning from overseas to return a negative test Before they move on, a plane we think is worth considering as the concentration of positive cases in our hotel quarantine is actually increasing daily, « he said.
