Two hospitals are facing an « urgent situation » after a number of nurses tested positive for Covid-19.
Patients at Llandovery Community Hospital and Amman Valley Hospital in Carmarthenshire, West Wales, are being treated in isolation due to the outbreak.
The Hywel Dda University Health Board, which administers both sites, has not disclosed how many people tested positive at each site, but has confirmed that both patients and staff are affected.
The health department admitted that maintaining hospital services was a challenge as both workers were under « significant restrictions ». .
The health department is working with local GPs and the Community Health Council to develop emergency measures to enable them to safely care for patients, reports Wales Online.
Jill Patterson, Director of Primary, Community and Long-Term Care at Hywel Dda University Health Board, said, “Covid-19 is a huge challenge for us at Hywel Dda, as it is for other NHS organizations across the UK.
« We face an urgent situation at Llandovery Community Hospital and Amman Valley Hospital, but I can assure patients, their families, and the local communities that any changes we make are temporary and in the best interests of patients are.
« While we recognize that we have human resource challenges, particularly due to Covid-19, our employees are working extremely hard to continue to provide the best possible care under the difficult circumstances, and I applaud their incredible efforts. ”
While temporary measures are being worked out and agreed, patients at Amman Valley Hospital and Llandovery Hospital will be cared for in accordance with infection prevention guidelines, using social distancing and personal protective equipment.
