UK rider warns lack of coverage makes women’s cycling’ invisible ‘ as she heads to the world road championships
As she prepares to return to the World Road Championships and a possible leadership role alongside Lizzie Deignan, Britain’s Lizzie Banks has made the strongest demands on the world governing body The 29-year-old told the Union Cycliste International to ‘put his money where it was’ and support races like the recent women’s Giro d’Italia, the Giro Rosa, which she described as “invisible” due to its lack of live TV coverage
Banks won a Giro stage for the second year in a row a courageous breakaway victory on the longest stage of the race in Tivoli town on day four and will compete in Saturday’s world championship road race at Imola at the helm of a strong women’s team from Great Britain that includes Deignan, Hannah Barnes and Anna Henderson But as the hilly course promises some dramatic races, calls to the UCI to push harder for equality are getting stronger and stronger
The Giro Rosa suffered in part because it was run at the same time as the rescheduled men’s Tour de France in a schedule that has been completely overhauled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but there has been vocal criticism from fans and runners for the lack of TV footage – Organizers were getting a lot of stick for not providing live coverage – they fought back, said the reason was they were struggling to save the race, – said the banks
If that’s true, this is where the UCI has to come in. If people can’t watch it, there is no point in having the race in the first place We have [taken] a step back since last year Last year you got to watch a lot of the race, this year you only had the last half hour and that doesn’t explain what happened during the raceâ € ”
Banks’ argument that “women’s cycling is really exciting” should no longer need to be done In recent weeks, the Grand Prix de Plouay â ???? where she finished second behind Deignan â ???? and La Course par le Tour de France, also won by Deignan, offered a captivating vision
– On the eighth stage [of the Giro Rosa] the shit hit the fan after 10 minutes and the race exploded It was carnage I know people want to watch it, from the interactions I have via social media i know there is a dramatically increased fan base but the UCI has to step in They have to say, ‘listen, we’re going to help you this year, then it’s your responsibility to get a sponsora???? I’m sure if we had the live coverage there would be someone out there who would be captivated and say it’s so good I’m going to sponsor him for the next five years Someone has to put his balls on the line and say, “I’ll help you.” at ????
In a year where race organizers are scrambling to organize their events in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the road racing world championships have been held in the Italian town of Imola Il There are only four events in a reduced program for elite men and women only, with junior races for men and women and men under 23 not taking place
While defending champion Annemiek van Vleuten may or may not take the start for Saturday depending on the condition of a broken wrist, the revamped season means that with just a few weeks run behind them, the rest of the peloton will be cooler than usual As Banks said, the current form depends on the support structures of the [riders] and how they coped with the anxiety of the lockdown The main protagonists are pretty goodâ ????
Banks, a former Sheffield University medical student, has clearly faced lockdown as well as anyone. She puts it down to two things: at the start of the season, with an Olympic spot on the line, she was “as fit as I have ever been” Then, when most of the world stopped in March, she decided to back down, in part on the assumption that there was unlikely to be a run at all this year.
– I took a few weeks very easily, I ate what I wanted, I did what I wanted, if I didn’t feel like riding a bike, I didn’t , maybe I’ll go for a walk instead After those three weeks I started going out Every day I challenged myself to go on a road I had never taken before, and whatever that was just a little side street, it was something i did for my own mental health, to keep the excitement going. It really workedâ ????
