Fabio Quartararo enjoys a morning without drama in a dramatic FP3 session which saw six crashes, including one for Joan Mir who leaves him in Q1 this afternoon

Fabio Quartararo broke the French flag at home at Le Mans as he overcame a dry but dramatic FP3 session characterized by an eruption of accidents in the later stages of the session

Although the first representative session of the weekend following Friday’s inclement weather, the cool temperatures this morning – the unusual product of the event which was held in October rather than its usual May slot – took its toll on a number of riders as their bikes escaped from them without warning

This included Joan Mir, who failed to make Q2 in 12th after losing the Suzuki at Turn 3 in a sudden slap While his jump from the slip-to-toe was particularly gentle (see the bottom of this report), he still puts him behind Quartararo, not least because cool conditions won’t generally suit the Suzuki this weekend.

Local hero Quartararo, meanwhile, largely controlled the proceedings throughout FP3, an important session given the dry conditions, Q2’s progress would be measured only on the times here

In all, six riders suffered accidents, including – beyond Mir – Alex Marquez, Alex Rins and Stefan Bradl Meanwhile, Valentino Rossi hit the bridge when he lost the Yamaha at the exit of the turn 3 but reduced damage to a minimum

Jack Miller, on the other hand, picked up the artistic stakes with an unexpected high-side at Turn 8, which made up for in height what he lost in speed as he rolled down his upper back and possibly head too. the first, although Miller was on his feet, he wouldn’t be back on track

After a grueling day for the KTMs on Friday, Miguel Oliveira jumped to the top of the timesheets with the second fastest time on the Tech 3 KTM, ahead of Franco Morbidelli on the second in the Petronas SRT Yamahas

Fastest in the wet yesterday, crashing today, Miller was still in the race in fourth place overall, ahead of Maverick Vinales and Cal Crutchlow, who is making his first Q2 appearance this year on the LCR Honda

He will be joined in the session by Johann Zarco to join his compatriot Quartararo to defend the French honor in the decisive session, while Rossi despite his fall, Pol Espargaro and a lucky Andrea Dovizioso have also reserved their direct passage in Q2

Although a huge improvement over yesterday’s forts, Brad Binder narrowly missed Q2 in 11th against the hapless Mir, who is also joined in Q1 by his teammate Suzuki Rins, with Pecco Bagnaia, Danilo Petrucci, both Repsol Honda riders, Aprilias, Tito Rabat and – exceptionally – Takaaki Nakagami in 18th
