EbeneMagazine – US – Thousands of ex-criminals in Florida to vote for the first time in a presidential election after completing rendition

This is the first presidential election since Florida restored the right to vote to those convicted of felony

It took months of battles in the legislature and the courts for the ex-criminals to receive their ballots

Now they can only do this after paying their legal fees, costs and fines

Action News Jax Alicia Tarancon reports that for many convicted of felony, polling day is a second chance

This year marks the first time Mark Krancer has voted since 2008 and since voting rights were restored to ex-convicts in 2018

« I ended up selling oxytocin charges, you know I was very addicted myself and sold to support my habit, » Krancer said

That’s what got him in and out of prison for years, but after spending 16 months in prison, Krancer changed his life

Krancer wants others to know that convicted felons are people too and that some of them just need a second chance

« I know there is still a lot of work to be done to change the perception of people you know of someone who made a mistake You know someone who may have changed their life, » Krancer said

Amendment 4 restored the rights of ex-convicts, but it does not restore the rights of those who have been convicted of murder or sexual assault Only non-violent offenders

This year Florida will see 14 million felony convicts vote for the next president

According to the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, a group that helps returning citizens go to the polls, more than 67,000 convicted felons have registered to vote in the November 3 election

Action News Jax told you this in 2019, when Krancer registered to vote, and recently he voted early for the 2020 presidential election

« It is a huge blessing for me and for our community that our voices are heard, everyone’s voice I know when I went to vote it was extremely rewarding and enriching for me personally », declared Kancer

Although Krancer’s voting rights have been restored, hundreds of thousands of convicted felons who would have the right to vote cannot because they have not paid a fee or restitution to serve their sentence
