FORD HEIGHTS, Ill (CBS) – A pilot died after a small plane crashed along Highway 394 in the southern suburbs on Tuesday afternoon

As CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar reported, Illinois State Police were called at 5:09 p.m. at the ramp to the Lincoln Freeway westbound from Route 394 heading south for a small unit plane crash

For unknown reasons the pilot crashed into the ramp, state police said The plane landed in the wooded area to the right and was seen sitting there late on Tuesday with a damaged tail

The pilot was airlifted off the scene and taken to a local hospital The pilot, identified as a 70-year-old man from Frankfurt, later died in hospital, state police confirmed on Wednesday from Illinois

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Glasair III aircraft struck a light pole first, then a vehicle on the ground before coming to rest on the embankment

There was no word on Tuesday evening whether the driver of the car hit by the plane was injured or if someone else on the ground was injured

Southbound Route 394 was blocked between Glenwood-Dyer Road and US 30 after the crash The ramps between 394 and Lincoln Freeway remained closed Tuesday evening

It was not clear on Tuesday evening where the small engine plane took off or where it was heading

FAA to investigate, while National Transportation Safety Board will determine probable cause of crash As it continued to rain late on Tuesday, weather will certainly be seen as a possible factor in the crash
