New RANGERS boy Bongani Zungu has taken a page from Steven Gerrard’s book as he prepares to launch as a Rangers player

The South Africa international – recalled to the national team ahead of next month’s games with Sao Tome – is finally ready to launch as Ibrox star after being forced into quarantine at his arrival in Scotland

But he was pictured donning a Rangers gang for the first time in a tweet sent by the club – and could even be involved against Lech Poznan tomorrow night as he was named to the European squad of the club

The social media clip even saw him use one of his coach and colleague midfielder Gerrard’s lines when he pointed out how keen he was to go for it

The midfielder said: « Hello everyone, this is Bongani Zungu, I can’t wait to start Let’s go »

Gerrard coined the phrase ‘Let’s go’ as crowds flocked to Ibrox to greet his arrival at the club

Zungu – recovered on an initial loan from Ligue 2 training in Amiens – has his work cut out for him to get the minutes of the first team to his credit

The midfielder is the strongest area in the Rangers squad – with players like Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, Scott Arfield, Joe Aribo and persevering Steven Davis all clamoring for regular inclusion

His arrival means they have six players pushing for three places and gives Gerrard the chance to refresh his entire midfield between European action on a Thursday and national action on Sunday

A complete midfielder in Gerrard’s mold, South African striking legend Benni McCarthy told Gers first-team coach Michael Beale that they had signed one of the most complete land in Europe

He said: « I know Michael very well because we were going through the same UEFA coaching courses together, so he called me to discuss Zungu

« They had a good idea of what kind of player he was and wanted my opinion on him too. I told them they would get a really good one if they signed him

« I have seen him flourish over the past few years and Rangers have got themselves a fantastic footballer

« He’s the complete midfielder, very comfortable on the ball and so strong in the tackle. He can also play as a defensive midfielder because he’s so good at cleaning

Zungu admits he looks forward to working with childhood hero Gerrard as he aims to improve his own game

He told RangersTV: « I grew up watching the gaffer and I am very excited to work with him

« I know he will help me in my game, he will help me grow, he will help me improve my skills and I hope to help the team succeed »

Zungo admits he’s also looking forward to fighting for his place in the squad of some great Rangers players

He added: « For each player, it’s pretty good to play among quality players and for me, it’s about adding my qualities

« Like I just said, it’s good to have quality around you and players who know what they’re doing

« Instead of having the mentality to compete, I feel very happy and I feel very honored to be here »
