The public broadcaster DR showed a terrifying video of hordes of excavated animal carcasses lying jam-packed in the Holstebro military training mass burial ground in the north-west of the country.
The national Berlingske daily jokingly described the phenomenon as « a dead zombie mink rising from the grave in revenge » after the government killed between 15 and 17 million animals earlier this month.
The reappearance of the carcasses is completely natural, however, officials assured. « During the decomposition, gases are generated that cause the bodies to swell a little and, in the worst case, be pushed out of the ground, » said police spokesman Thomas Kristensen.
Kristensen said the mink carcasses last reappeared early Monday morning, but they did so earlier. Authorities tried to solve the problem by putting more soil over the dead animals. However, a meter of earth proved insufficient to keep them underground.
According to DR, mink is now buried under 2. 5 meters (6. 5 feet) of earth instead of one.
The government ordered the mass slaughter of minks on farms after a mutated version of the coronavirus was discovered in some animals. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen later admitted that the government had no legal authority to issue such an order and apologized.
