EbeneMagazine – GB – ‘Not good enough’: Harrogate council leader opposes negotiations to place all of Yorkshire in level 2 lockdown

North Yorkshire could be moved to Covid Level 2 restrictions, along with all of Yorkshire, « to end the confusion »

Here are the latest Covid figures for each area of the Harrogate district last week

It was revealed yesterday that officials were in ‘active discussions’ to bring all of Yorkshire and the Humber under the same restrictions to end the confusion and help prevent infections across county borders

It’s a move that would see the Tier 1 areas of North Yorkshire, East Riding and Hull join West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and York under Tier 2 restrictions

But Harrogate chief executive Richard Cooper said « it is not enough to say it will just be easier » to change lockdown levels when infection rates differ significantly from a region to another

« If this logic is followed we would just have a nationwide lockdown because it is the easiest thing to understand, » he said

« Moving the Harrogate neighborhood to a different level, like any other area, must be done on the evidence base If clinical evidence shows we need tighter controls to limit the spread of infection, we have to do it «

Dr Lincoln Sargeant, director of public health for North Yorkshire, said that while special attention would be given to the impact on ‘vital’ hospitality and leisure businesses, having lockdown status in Yorkshire and the Humber would have region-wide advantages

He said in a meeting: « There are reasons to move together The first is about consistency, there have been a number of questions about border issues, particularly in North Yorkshire, because around us we have level 2 zones and people move to work across the border

« There are also concerns about the potential impact on the nursing home sector, on translating infections into cases affecting the elderly and more vulnerable population

« So there is an argument for all of us going to level 2, because I think it didn’t take very long for York to progress »

North Yorkshire’s seven-day mobile infection rate is 129 – lower than the England average of 157

In the level 2 restrictions, households cannot mix indoors and home visits are limited to ‘exceptional’ cases. The home visiting rule already applies throughout North Yorkshire until ‘at the end of this month

No date has been given for which potential changes to county levels could be made

Councilor Cooper added: « If we find the new multi-layered system difficult to understand, we need to go the extra mile to understand it properly – to re-read the advice, discuss what it means with friends and colleagues. , examine the detail which corresponds to our specific circumstances on the UK wwwgov website

« However, we all know the basics – wash your hands, cover your face, create some space and if you have symptoms, get tested and stay home There is nothing difficult there «
