Minnesota United’s postponed home game against Chicago due to coronavirus will now be played on November 4 while another postponed to FC Dallas has not been postponed and may never be

Seven Colorado Rapids games from September have been postponed due to an outbreak among players and league staff rethinking everything during a pandemic

When the regular season ends with « Decision Day » on November 8, not all 26 MLS teams will have played the same number of games – or the same number of home and away games. It’s an imbalance that will cause the league to consider formulas to adjust the standings and the playoffs in the name of fairness

On Friday, the Supporters’ Shield Foundation announced that it had overturned its decision not to award a silver plateau, a league tradition since 1999, honoring the best team in the regular season

He did so after the backlash from supporters, coaches and the league of players which caused him to reconsider He decided after a week to present a fan shield next month despite the imbalances and the fact that there are no supporters at the games here when the regular season resumes

Loons coach Adrian Heath not sure how the final standings determine which teams are destined for the playoffs and which won’t play But he knows it’s a subject of great debate

« I don’t know, » he said « I think this is something most clubs are talking about I don’t see unless they extend the season and I don’t say I heard that I don’t see how Colorado is going to integrate all of their games into It’s going to be practically impossible, I think «

The Loons could very well play 22 of their 23 regular season games if the FC Dallas game is not postponed. If that happens and they no longer have a postponement, they will play two games less at home and away from Allianz Field

The 2001 MLS regular season ended with teams not playing the same number of games after it was reconfigured due to the September 11 terrorist attacks that had minimal impact on the standings, and playoff seeds were determined by head-to-head competition rather than the traditional points-based method that awards three points for a win and one for a draw in the regular season

Veteran Loons midfielder and MLS Players Association board member Ethan Finlay has said he has « no inside knowledge » of what the league will decide to do

>

« The players realize that points are going to be extremely important whether they are bringing in points per game or however they decide to resolve this issue, » Finlay said after the 2-2 draw at home Sunday against Houston « It’s a crazy year It was crazy for everyone, so we have to worry about what we can control »

Finlay called Sunday’s draw a « hugely disappointing result here at home » for a team that has taken one win and four draws in their last seven games

The Loons’ 6-5-6 record places them fifth in the Western Conference If the only determining factor became points won per game, they would still be in fifth place – tied with Dallas FC on average 141 points per game – while Colorado would drop from 11th to 4th place

« I don’t think the points per game are particularly fair for teams that have had to play until Saturday-Wednesday-Sunday [times], » said Heath « It’s not fair I’m glad I’m not the guy making that decision about what we do, because obviously there will be people who are happy and people who are unhappy

Heath has said he agrees with the original Supporters ’Shield Foundation decision not to award it this season

« I thought it was a good move for the simple reason that you can’t have people with completely uneven schedules, » Heath said

For his team that may only have five games to play, veteran Loons forward Kei Kamara says there is only one thing to do: win, baby

“It’s crunch time,” Kamara said “You have to win your games and maximize the points because we want to be in the playoffs That’s the only reason we’re still here We have to maximize every point that we get: winning every game we get here and trying to sneak a couple down the road «
