The UN chief expressed « concern » over reported armed clashes in northern Ethiopia, calling for immediate action to defuse tensions and ensure a peaceful resolution of the dispute, said his spokesperson

« The Secretary-General renews the commitment of the United Nations, with its partners in the region, to support the Ethiopian government in its reform efforts aimed at building a peaceful and secure future for all its peoples, » word Stéphane Dujarric said in a statement Wednesday evening

Following reported violence in the Tigray region, UN spokesperson Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the importance of Ethiopia’s stability for the Horn of Africa region

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Wednesday ordered a military response to a Tiger Liberation Front (TPLF) attack on a military camp in the regional capital of Mekele, citing months of « provocation and incitement » and stating that « the last red line was crossed »

Previously, senior officials of the TPLF, a group that fell out with the ruling party, blocked army movements inside and outside Tigray state

Just over a week ago, a general newly appointed by the federal government to lead the army’s northern division in Tigray was returned to the capital Addis Ababa upon his arrival in Mekele, where regional leaders have held elections in defiance of federal authorities in August

In a statement, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) expressed concern at the escalation of violence in the Horn of Africa country

« Rising hostilities in the Tigray region threaten the immediate safety of hundreds of thousands of people Any increase in violence would herald further regional destabilization and humanitarian catastrophe We call on all parties to resolve tensions through dialogue and to take all appropriate measures to put an end to the military action ”, declared the NRC

There are currently 182 million internally displaced people across Ethiopia and a further 790,000 refugees seeking protection from further conflicts in the East African region, according to the NRC
