EbeneMagazine – AU – Liberal leader Liza Harvey resigns just a few months before the state elections

. .

West Australian Liberal Leader Liza Harvey resigned just four months before the state elections.

The liberal leader made the shock announcement Sunday morning, saying the party needed a new leadership team.

In a message to Liberal party members, Harvey said that with a new team at the top, the party had a chance to win the state elections in March 2021.

« I’m standing aside to give the Liberal Party – with a new leadership team – a chance to reset our electoral strategy and give the public a real vote in the March elections, » said Harvey.

« I am also standing aside to give our very good candidates the opportunity to be elected as the new generation of Liberal Party members, » she said.

“This decision gives them clean air. They are energetic young men and women who will be strong, hard working members to their communities. ”

There has been speculation that Harvey may have faced a leadership challenge at the MPs last week’s party room meeting, but her pre-election position appeared secure when no candidates challenged her.

The shadow treasurer Dean Nalder has announced to the ABC that he will be the new leader. The Bateman MP unsuccessfully challenged Prime Minister Colin Barnett in 2016. Health spokesman Zak Kirkup and Cottesloe MP David Honey are also considered potential party leaders.

Whoever takes the top position will face a major challenge in the state elections. Current Labor Prime Minister Mark McGowan enjoys record approval ratings after the Covid-19 epidemic.

Labor celebrated a landslide victory in the 2017 state elections, and the Liberals lost 18 seats in parliament. Those who take the lead face an enormous challenge in returning to government.

While Nalder and Honey have safe seats with decent margins, Kirkup’s Dawesville seat has one of the narrowest margins. A swing of only 0. I could see him without a seat, even though he was one of the best performers in the opposition.

Harvey has confirmed that she will again contest her Scarborough seat in the elections but will not remain as leader.
