EbeneMagazine – AU – Cup order unchanged as Princess Jenni claims Bendigo Cup

The Melbourne Cup entry order was not affected after Princess Jenni faced Pondus in a thrilling Bendigo Cup final on Wednesday

The mare trained by David Brideoake had been nominated in early September for the Melbourne Cup, but was not among the first acceptances at the end of last month, and entered into Wednesday’s Bendigo race seeking to reverse his series of four unplaced starts this campaign

But she proved to be the strongest in the end, with only backmarker Pondus threatening to overtake the summit in the final stages of the 2,400-meter competition

Pondus, who on his last start competed in the Ebor Handicap in York, had been well supported late to win Wednesday’s race, but ran into trouble early in the race when Supergirl appeared to break down , causing some interference in Pondus

But Damian Lane managed to put the stayer belonging to Lloyd Williams in a straight line, albeit a little too late as Jye McNeil jumped on Princess Jenni

« I was traveling so well before the turn that I almost fell into the trap of improving too soon, but she was starting to peak a bit on her late run, » McNeil said

« The race was over by then and the way things went during the race it was just perfect »

It’s been a good week for McNeil, who won the Geelong Cup last Wednesday on Steel Prince and piloted his first Cox Plate aboard Grandslam

Princess Jenni will likely tackle the 2000-meter matriarch’s stakes against her own gender on her next start according to Brideoake

« We just didn’t have enough work and a half in it [to pay for the Melbourne Cup], » he said

« She’s just such a good horse and I knew she was in good shape, to lift like that But the ride, the ride was exceptional

« He’s such a good horse and honestly this preparation, she didn’t do anything wrong, she just had a series of gates and bits that didn’t get us a result But , today it’s a good result «

Pondus will more than likely go to the Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 2,600 meters on the last day of the Cup carnival, while Zebrowski and Saracen Knight both had their chances of winning but made no impression

King Of Leogrance remains in 23rd place in the Melbourne Cup entry order and is effectively guaranteed a start in the race, while True Self, 24th, finds himself in a vulnerable position with Lexus Hotham Stakes Saturday offering the winner a ticket for Tuesday’s 3200 -classic meter

Ashrun (29th), Platinum Invador (28th), Hush Writer (30th) and Schabau (40th) are among the riders who will participate in Saturday’s race
