Ford released a statement today saying it had not received a « formal » response from the government after asking for urgent measures to prevent infected people from entering Ontario.
“In the past two weeks we have sent the federal government three urgent letters asking for immediate action at the borders. The Prime Minister also appealed directly to the Prime Minister last Thursday. To date, we have not received a formal response to our inquiries and there has been no indication that further action will be taken to stop the importation of variants into Canada. «
The Prime Minister says planes with infected passengers have continued to land in Pearson for the past two weeks.
» In the same two-week period, over 150,000 people came across our land borders and more than 65,000 came through our airports Canada. In addition, 35 international and 23 domestic flights from outside Ontario with COVID positive passengers landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport, many of these planes carried several people infected with the virus and uncovered an unknown number of other travelers arriving in Ontario. «
» These and countless other cases could have been avoided if action had been taken sooner. We are once again calling on the federal government to impose stricter measures on our borders, including banning all non-essential travel and performing pre-departure PCR testing for domestic flights. We can’t sit back and watch the fourth wave of COVID-19 runs over our border. “
