Before this the counting of voting of Surat Municipal Corporation has started. The counting of votes started this morning. There are 484 candidates in the fray for a total of 120 seats in Surat. The main contest is between BJP and Congress candidates. The fate of these candidates will be decided by this afternoon. The counting of votes is going on at Surat’s Gandhi Engineering College and SVNIT College. For this, strong security arrangements have been made at the counting centers.

Counting has been started in two phases at both counting centers. In the first phase in SVNIT, votes are being counted in ward 29, 14, 27, 25, 1, 21, 10 and 15. In the second phase, the ward numbers would be 30, 19, 28, 26, 9, 22, 11 and 18 votes. In the first phase, votes in Ward 23, 4, 6, 8, 16, 2 and 13 will be counted in Gandhi College. In the second phase, votes will be counted in ward numbers 24, 5, 7, 12, 17, 3 and 20. Surat had a voter turnout of 45.51 percent.

According to the Election Commission, on an average 45.64 percent voting was done in six municipal corporations. In this by-election for Junagadh Municipal Corporation seat, 51.85 percent voting was done. In these elections, men voted more than women. The turnout was 48.73 percent for male voters and 42.18 percent for female voters.

The highest turnout in Jamnagar Municipal Corporation was 53.64 percent. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation had the lowest turnout of 42.51 percent. Polling was 45.51 percent in Surat Municipal Corporation, 47.99 percent in Vadodara Municipal Corporation, 50.75 percent in Rajkot Municipal Corporation and 49.47 percent in Bhavnagar.
