He was instrumental in the freedom movement against the British rule of India. He led an Indian national force from abroad against the Western powers during World War II. He was a contemporary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. However he stayed with Gandhiji as an ally and then as an opponent. Bose was particularly known for his militant policy for freedom while Gandhiji followed the path of non-violence.
