Ebene Magazine - Steph Curry overtakes Reggie Miller on the NBA's 3-point list

Stephen Curry overtook Reggie Miller with his 3-point fall in the third quarter in Saturday’s game against Jazz, finishing second on the NBA’s 3-point list.

Curry got the pass from Draymond Green and picked up a sloping 3-pointer from the corner that cut Utah’s lead to 79-50 at 10:59 in the third quarter.
The shot gave Curry 2,561, making 3-points for his career, behind only Ray Allen (2,973) on the all-time list. In January 2019, Curry moved up to third place behind Miller.

Miller made 2,560 3-pointers over 1,389 regular season games during his 18-year NBA career. It took Curry just 715 games to beat Miller’s mark in more than eleven seasons.

At his current pace, it wouldn’t take Curry more than 100 games to catch Allen. In this shortened 72-game season, Curry would probably not question Allen’s record until the second half of the 2021-22 season.

Curry’s range and accuracy influenced a game that for so long had valued size and valuation. Its ability to shoot from dribbling, catching, and more than 30 feet away heralded an era of unprecedented 3-point shooting volume and efficiency.

« Steph and Ray (Allen) are the top two in my opinion in terms of the variety of their 3-point shot, » said Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who started coaching Curry in 2014. I’ll be at the top of this list. The ability to shoot in so many different ways is an incredible threat to the defense.  »

While the Warriors are looking to return to the playoffs this season, Curry is the two-time MVP, the NBA’s third-top scorer and Golden State’s main offensive player. You need it to keep doing 3 pointers in an all-time clip.

« I’ve been blessed to coach Steph and I’ve seen him play all these years, » said Kerr, « and enjoying the show like everyone else. »
