Russian director Kantemir Balagov (Tightness, Dylda) will direct the pilot episode of the HBO series based on the action-adventure The Last of Us, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Chernobyl director Johan Renck will not be able to direct the pilot episode due to the tight schedule.
Recall that the screenplay of The Last of Us is written by the creator of the HBO show « Chernobyl » Craig Mazin and the creative director of the original source Neil Druckmann. The video game is set 20 years after modern civilization was destroyed. The focus is on smuggler Joel and teenager Ellie, who could hold the key to a cure for a deadly disease.
Joel is a zombie apocalypse survivor who was hired to take a 14-year-old girl out of a strict quarantine zone. What starts with a little work soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking adventure as the heroes travel across the United States and rely on each other.
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, the presence of Balagov among the directors suggests that HBO is determined to make the film adaptation in a serious dramatic tone.
