There have been two previous matches between these players, with having been played in 2015. Pegula won the first on the grass of Hertogenbosch before Ostapenko made it 1-1 in Quebec.
It wasn’t the best of starts for Pegula this season when she fell in the first round of the Abu Dhabi Open early in January but this was followed by a reasonable run at the Yarra Valley Classic – a third round place in the tuneup tournament to the Australian Open warmed her nicely for what was to follow.
At the Australian Open, Pegula registered her best ever Grand Slam result by making it to the quarterfinal there. More vitally, Pegula got there with wins over Victoria Azarenka, Samantha Stosur, Kristina Mladenovic and Elina Svitolina, three of whom can be called big-ticket players.
Surprisingly here in Doha, she had to go through the qualifiers because her ranking at the time of registration wasn’t high enough but other than a match against Anastasia Potapova where she needed two tie-breakers and three sets to go through, Pegula has faced no real issues.
Even in the opener in the main draw, Pegula raced off to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Wang Qiang, a former world number 12 and a solid player in her own right. Can she now slide past her Latvian opponent?
The odds were in favour of Ostapenko for her first round match against the world number 11 Kiki Bertens, but not too many would have expected the 51st-ranked player to come on top the manner in which did.
Ostapenko was on court for less than an hour in her 6-0, 6-2 drubbing of Bertens in which ran off to winning seven games in a row to kick-start the match before her opponent even got started. And while Bertens was returning back to the sport after having last played at the French Open, it was a resounding and a confidence-inducing win for Ostapenko.
Earlier, the Latvian player had herself been banished out of the first round at the Australian Open losing in straight sets to Karolina Muchova but a solid performance in that warmup tournament in Melbourne before the year’s first Grand Slam – third round at the Gippsland Trophy – would have given her some confidence.
Pegula starts off a favourite at 4/6 and we will have to go with those odds for just the manner in which she has been dismantling opponents in recent times.
