Kris Letang and Evan Rodrigues scored in the second half, and the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated New York Rangers 5-2 at Madison Square Garden.
Radim Zohorna and Jason Zucker scored one and one each Template added, Mark Jankowski also scored and Letang and Rodrigues each had an template. Tristan Jarry stopped 22 shots to help Pittsburgh skid a two-game.
Colin Blackwell and Kevin Rooney scored for Rangers, who were 3-0-1 in their last four games. Igor Shesterkin, who started for the fifth game in a row, scored 27 saves.
The Penguins had given up 15 goals in their last two games – a 7-5 defeat in Boston last Saturday and a 8-4 defeat here against the Rangers on Tuesday night.
Zucker hit a backhand player 9:31 in third for sixth to give the Penguins a 4-1 lead.
Rooney pulled the Rangers within two 6:12 left. Adam Fox pulled Jarry out to the left of the goalkeeper as he ran past the goal line and sent a pass forward, and Rooney hit the open goal.
The Rangers pulled Shesterkin for an extra skater with just over 2 1/2 Minutes ahead, but Jankowski sealed it a minute later with a blank nice to seal it.
Blackwell tied it at 1 at 2:02 of the second. With the Rangers in their second power play of the game, Kaapo Kakko sent a pass to Pavel Buchnevich at the bottom of the right circle, and Buchnevich passed it on to Blackwell, who quickly defeated Jarry for the eleventh time.
Letang put the Penguins 1: Back in the front 21 later when his pass for Bryan Rust was deflected to the front of the net by Chris Kreider’s stick and through the legs of defender Ryan Lindgren and past Shesterkin. It was Letang’s seventh.
In the second power play of the Penguins, Zohorna got a pass from Zucker below the left circle near the goal line and sent him in front of Rodrigues, who defeated Shesterkin with 8:32 for his fifth goal to make it 3-1 .
Sidney Crosby, the Penguins star center, went to the locker room late in the second phase with an equipment problem, but was back on the ice for the third time.
Kreider had a penalty with 2:01 in the middle after being defeated by Cody Ceci on a runaway, but Jarry declined his attempt.
The Penguins came out aggressively, leaving the Rangers 13: 5 behind them in the first period, including 9: 2 in the first 5 1/2 minutes. Pittsburgh then broke on his 10th attempt.
After a long pass from Marcus Pettersson, Zohorna ran up the right side, cut in front of goal and hit Shesterkin from the left at 6:26 for his second goal in four games this season.
The Rangers got COVID vaccines on Wednesday and most of the players got their shots.
« We are very happy to have this vaccine, » said defender Jacob Trouba . « It was obviously a crazy time. … Hopefully we can move on to a little more normal life in the near future. »
