Lucknow:

It has rarely happened in the history that even after half a century after the death of a leader, there have been various speculations about him. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose may have ‘died’ in an air crash in August 1945, but for those who believe him, he is still alive as ‘Gumnami Baba’. Gumnami Baba – many of whom believe that he is actually Netaji (Bose) and lived in disguise as a monk in many places in Uttar Pradesh, including Naimisharanya (Nimsar), Basti, Ayodhya and Faizabad. It is believed that he used to change his place of residence mostly within the city. He never stepped out of his house, but only met some of his confidants in the room and most people claimed to never see him. A landlord, Gurbax Singh Sodhi, tried to take his case twice to Faizabad’s civil court, but was unsuccessful. This information was given by his son Manjit Singh to the Justice Sahay Commission of Inquiry set up to identify Gumnami Baba. Given in the statement. Later, a journalist Virender Kumar Mishra also lodged a police complaint. Gumnami Baba finally settled in an out-house at Ram Bhawan in Faizabad in 1983, where he allegedly died on 16 September 1985 and on 18 September He was cremated two days later. If it was indeed Netaji, he was 88 years old. Strangely, there is no evidence that he actually died. There is no death certificate, photograph of the dead body or any photo of the people present during the funeral. There is also no cremation certificate. In fact, people did not know about the death of Gumnami Baba, 42 days after his death. His life and death are both shrouded in mystery and no one knows why. A local newspaper, Janmorcha, had earlier conducted an inquiry on the issue. He found no evidence of Gumnami Baba being Netaji. Its editor Sheetla Singh met Netaji’s colleague Pabitra Mohan Roy in Kolkata in November 1985. Roy said, « We are looking for every saint and mysterious person in search of Netaji, Kohima (Nagaland from Saulmari (West Bengal)) ) To Punjab. Similarly, we found Babaji in Basti, Faizabad and Ayodhya. But I can say with certainty that he was not Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.  » Despite being denied official or other sources, his ‘believers’ refused to believe that Gumnami Baba was not Netaji, although the Uttar Pradesh government has officially rejected the claim that Gumnami Baba was indeed Bose , His followers still refuse to accept this claim. The believers of Gumnami Baba moved the court in 2010 and the High Court, in favor of them, directed the Uttar Pradesh government to establish the identity of Gumnami Baba. The government constituted a commission of inquiry on 28 June 2016 The presiding judge was Justice Vishnu Sahai. The report said that ‘Gumnami Baba’ was a follower of Netaji, but not Netaji. A prominent surgeon from Gorakhpur, who did not want to reveal his name, was one such Beliver. He said, « We kept asking the Government of India to declare that Netaji was not a war criminal, but our pleas are not heard. » Baba did not want to be seen as a criminal. It does not matter whether the government believes him or not. We believe and will continue to do so. We want to be recognized as his ‘believers’ because We believe in him. « The doctors were among those who regularly visited Gumnami Baba and still believe in him as a ‘fanatic’. In February 1986, Lalita Bose, Netaji’s niece, was brought to Faizabad to identify the items found in Gumnami Baba’s room after his death. At first glance, she was overwhelmed and even identified some items of Netaji’s family. Baba’s room had a collection of more than 2,000 articles in 25 steel trunks. No one saw it during his lifetime. It matters little to those who believe him that two consecutive commissions under the chairmanship of Justice Mukherjee and Justice Sahay had declared that ‘Gumnami Baba’ was not Netaji.
