As negotiations continue between Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes, former Formula One boss Eddie Jordan has told team principal Toto Wolff what he could offer to secure a new contract.

The 36-year-old won his seventh world title last year and is said to want to be remunerated sufficiently.

However, such is Hamilton’s driving ability and public image, Jordan believes that the Brit is worth the extra investment, so much so that he should be included in the media rights of the team.

“The TV rights that Mercedes are getting as a result of winning the drivers’ and the constructors’ championship,” he told the PA news agency.

“He has been a hugely important part of the success and the reward they are getting.

« Who is the first person the TV people want to speak to first? Lewis. Do Lewis’ comments get repeated much more than anyone else? Of course they do.

“If you look at LeBron James and Tiger Woods, they went to the organisers of their respective sports and said that we bring more credibility and support because of who we are and you need to compensate us.

« So pay Lewis an amount of money that the team are getting. I cannot see how he is not entitled to that.

“Some might say he is already being overpaid, and maybe so, but we all said that nobody would ever come close to Michael Schumacher’s record and now you have a driver who has the potential to beat him by becoming an eight-time world champion. And make no mistake, Lewis is getting better.”

Jordan also expressed his belief that Hamilton and Mercedes will come to an agreement before the end of the week.

With pre-season testing a little over a month away, securing new terms quickly is vital as every other team has their driver line-up locked up for the 2021 campaign.

Express Sport understands that Mercedes are confident a new contract will be hashed out before pre-season testing in March, while Hamilton previously expressed his desire to return to the team.

“I plan to be here next year. I want to be here next year,” he said in December as quoted by Mercedes’ official Twitter account.

“I think we as a team have more to do together and more to achieve, both in the sport but even more outside it.”
