From the moment Rosamund Pike purposefully stepped out of the elevator for the virtual Golden Globes last month, wearing a red Molly Goddard tulle dress and pretending to set off the fire alarm with her Alexander McQueen-style army boots , it was clear that red carpet fashion was not going to be boring this season.

What an awards season it has been so far when we dressed our PJs from the comfort of their homes and watched the stars in their homes.

There is nothing like the curious in the homes of the stars and they have certainly opened up to us a lot more this year, as socially distant “virtual” awards inevitably meant red carpets with scaly backs.

The undoing star Nicole Kidman and her singer-husband Keith Urban shared a rare picture of their family as they posed at the Golden Globes with daughters Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.

Across California, Kaley Cuoco, who has been nominated in multiple awards for her appearance on The Flight Attendant, has given us several views of her pool pose in Oscar de la Renta for the Golden Globes and Pink Prabal Gurung for the SAGs.

In Canada, Catherine O’Hara pampered us from her garden with high glamor along the Moira Rose / Schitt’s Creek scale.

Did you all do your own hair and make-up? Well, given Hollywood beauty standards, that’s probably a stretch either way. In between those nasty technical difficulties, however, there was plenty of work to be done to interrupt the shutdown, from creeping acceptances over video link and noisy families in the background.

But there were some lovable moments with the reformatted awards. There were the sweet cuddles with pets on the couch, as Gucci-wearing Dubliner Barry Keoghan had done last night with his beloved pooch King Koda, who was waiting to see if he’d won a Bafta. Or Helen Mirren talks in this month’s SAGs about her incident when she met a bear during the Nevada lockdown.

Yes, the 2021 awards season so far – with the Golden Globes, Grammys, SAGs, Critics Choice and the Baftas from last night – brought a new level of familiarity with the Thespis disciples.

With the Oscars around the corner on Sunday April 26th, we may be more invested in the question of who collects a gong during the night, and according to old tradition we are curious what they could also wear, since there have been many risk takers.

I love what nomadland actress Cynthia Erivo has done. It was a revelation week after week, from shining lime Valentino at the Golden Globes to a sculptural and playful cream Alexander McQueen gown for the SAGs, metallic Louis Vuitton for the Grammys, Vera Wang at the Critics’ Choice Awards and a shorter, but still stunning silver and gold Louis Vuitton gown for the Baftas last night.

Without a doubt, one of the biggest and hugely positive changes for the stars this season is that they are in complete control by sharing their pictures on Instagram had, so no bad angles. How empowering is that when you consider the whims of posing on the red carpet. And for ultimate creative control, do what Kerry Washington did for the SAGs and wear your 1920s-inspired Etro dress and swim cap in your pool!

The Galway girl Nicola Coughlan, star of the Derry Girls and Bridgerton, had a stellar virtual red carpet season for both her fashion and makeup and definitely shouldn’t fire the stylist because Aimee Croysdill did it right for her / p> « I think there is a very good balance between escapism and awareness of what happened in the world, and I think people have really achieved that, » says Irish designer Laura Jayne Halton.

Halton has attracted a number of Irish women for the Oscars red carpet, and since her personal style is very similar to classic old-school Hollywood glamor all the way to hair and red lips, it’s no surprise she says s he pieces of loves Vanessa Kirby’s style in this awards season, when she wore Givenchy with exciting conviction and wowed her with a Versace shift dress last night.

Ballyheigue-born designer Don O’Neill has a long line of top stars for the red carpet dressed, from Taylor Swift to Khloe Kardashian, and also had the unique distinction of dressing both Oprah Winfrey (for her Oscar) and Meghan Markle for a royal tour.

He believes 2021 will be remembered “as one of the best seasons of the red carpet because many celebrities felt like the pressure to do a stunt on the red carpet was gone and they were in felt confident in their own surroundings to choose a dress that really spoke to them. «

Last night’s Baftas had the potential to go horribly wrong when the show bravely moved from the Royal Albert Hall in London to Los Angeles So Dermot O’Leary was wise to bless himself on stage, he looked chic in his trademark Thom Sweeney tailoring and, miraculously, co-host Edith Bowman’s strapless dress managed to stay up all night.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas meanwhile played the sustainable card and wore upcycling couture with a red embroidered jacket and a white skirt.

Did Oscar-winning actress and film director Emerald Fennell woke up in embarrassment today after giving not one but two acceptance speeches for awards for her directorial debut in Promising Young Woman? Who knows, but at least Emerald (who wore a white chevron organza dress by Roland Mouret) didn’t have to worry about returning jewelry because her father is the famous jeweler Theo Fennell.

We leaned forward to get a better view of Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s sensational silver Art Deco Louis Vuitton dress while Anna Kendrick set the bar early on a zoom call from LA and in a very long-legged Zuhair Murad dress posed, it all had thigh-high split qualities that we remember in Angelina Jolie’s Versace dress at the 2012 Oscars.

While the Baftas color palette in London was mostly black, no doubt a nod to Prince Philip’s death last Friday, the guest hosts made it interesting with silhouettes and textural additions.

Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor in a strapless black fishtail from Louis Vuitton, Sophie Cookson’s black Armani dress had sensationally sparkling blue shoulders, and Felicity Jones wore pearls with Valentino fringes.

Renée Zellwegers The second metal skin midi dress made of Armani Prive was the complete opposite of Rosamund’s voluminous Molly Goddard last night, which she had bought last year at London’s Dover Street Market.

Top marks for Rose Byrne in LA, who happily inspired tuxedo wearers in a breathtaking, cropped tuxedo jacket by Miu Miu with wide satin lapels and high-waisted trousers. Sharp suits are the result of my favorite Dan Levy’s cream made-to-measure awards, The Row for the SAGs. What a chic guy.

Harry Styles always makes me laugh at what he does to Gucci and Josh O’Connor killed it in Loewe.

The pandemic was the perfect opportunity to tear up the rulebook and find a recalibrated course of action – but will it stay that way next year? No way. If anything, the trains get longer, the colors get more powerful. You’re drawing moments on the red carpet as Taylor Swift’s sensational, 3D-flowered Oscar de la Renta gown is reinvented for the Grammys Worldwide for summer consumption on High Street.

From an entrant perspective, the big bonus was not spending hours in limos to wait to arrive. Can you imagine what Elle Fanning’s silk blue Gucci dress for the Golden Globes could have looked like if she had to sit down and hang out?

I have to say that you would miss Irish actress Saoirse Ronan on the red carpet this season. Her style is constantly evolving, always surprising, and you can imagine what she was wearing from her couch and what she was saying from the comfort of her home. And would she have mentioned her Tropical Popical nails?
