This is not the type of query people usually encounter throughout their lives. But this is the exact question one Influencer posed to her Facebook followers after uploading a picture of herself holding the heart of a giraffe she just killed.
The Mirror reports how 32-year-old Merelize van der Merwe—an avid hunter since the age of five—received the chance to achieve her “dream” of killing a bull giraffe as a Valentine’s Day gift from her husband when he spent £1,500 (a little over $2,000 USD) at a game park in South Africa.
It was there that she was able to shoot the 17-year-old bull giraffe, taking multiple photos standing triumphantly with its corpse and then its heart. Needless to say, many who caught wind of the posts weren’t all too thrilled at Van der Merwe’s actions.

Ever since Van der Merwe posted the photos of her “big dream” coming true on the social media platform, many other users—a portion of which are self-proclaimed animal rights activists—have flooded her page decrying her actions. A few even started petitions to ban her account.
“What kind of satisfaction can you find in killing such a majestic animal?” asked one commenter on Facebook.
In response to this backlash, Van der Merwe has consistently stood by the post as well as her hunting lifestyle. The public figure states that hunting not only protects tourism jobs, but also proves to be beneficial for the environment as a whole.
“When you publish your articles about me, please also publish that Kenya banned hunting in 1977 and lost 80 percent of all their wildlife because a goat has more value to the people than wildlife,” says Van der Merwe in a previous post.
Van der Merwe has also shared that she’s since received death threats and has had people attempt to hack her email numerous times.
