RB Leipzig center-back Ibrahima Konaté has been heavily linked to a move to Liverpool in recent months, but the French international has now commented on claims that he has already had talks with Anfield Club.
Sunday World put the story in a nutshell that Konaté was one of Liverpool’s top transfer destinations for that summer in mid-March. Later reports in Germany and Great Britain confirmed that he was on a list of potential signings for Jürgen Klopp’s side.
It was reported that Konaté’s agents had already started talks with Liverpool about a possible move. A leading reporter in Germany claimed a deal was « tight » between the two parties.
But Konaté has now told Bild that he has not spoken to Liverpool and it seems that his focus is on RB Leipzig for the time being.
« I or my agents did not receive a call from Liverpool. I also have big goals with RB Leipzig.
» These are currently the best possible results in the Bundesliga, the Cup final and the U21 European Championship with France «
With his Leipzig team-mate Dayot Upamecano struck a deal for Bayern Munich this summer, Konaté now appears to be the next big target for European clubs considering a deal for a player who has a release clause in Amounting to £ 34m in his contract.
Still, he seems relaxed with his position in Leipzig as he added: « I have a contract until 2023. And contracts are there to end. »
The Sunday World are aware that Konaté is a very important destination for Liverpool but no decision has been made on transfers as funds will need to be generated by the departure of star names.
Liverpool may also have to decide whether to Ozan Kabak’s loan move from Schalke is to be permanent or a move for Konaté, with Klopp’s finances likely to be tight unless he approves the sale of one of his star men to fund a team rebuild.

After a season without a trophy for Liverpool, they have to find a new identity as a team and as a club in order to become stronger next season.
Jamie Carragher didn’t hold back when he presented his case to convince Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland to join Liverpool this summer.
Mohamed Salah’s tormented demeanor held up a mirror to Liverpool that night. Nothing about the script they had written in their minds, in which they recorded the historic result against Barcelona in 2019 by humiliating the 13-time champion who turned them down in 2018, unfolded quite like them intended it. Everywhere they looked the magic of Anfield was missing.
