Wangchuk, an engineer, innovator, and educationist, has devised a solar power-heated military tent that would not only accommodate our soldiers in rough terrains but would also help them keep warm in areas of freezing temperatures. If that weren’t enough, the tent is a solar tent meaning it uses no fuel such as kerosene or diesel, making the creation earth-friendly.

In a Facebook post, the innovator shared the details about his noble project and showed proof of the difference in degrees in and outside the solar-powered tent working completely on fuel from the natural source of light.

» 15 C at 10pm. Minimum outside last night was -14 C, Uses only sunlight, water and insulated layers to maintain temperature, » Wangchuk wrote. « Designed for 8 to 10 soldiers, it is fully portable for difficult terrains. Each part weighs less than 30 Kgs, » he added before saying that the project potentially does away with emission.

In the now-viral post, Wangchuk also informed that the tent was made in Ladakh, a union territory where he resides.

Netizens who follow Wangchuk for his works and creations hailed the engineer for his new invention.

« We all salute u Sir. India is very hot country..We can utilize solar energy for all Indians (providing electricity to all living in remote areas).. »

« What a great innovation Sir please don’t allow anyone else to post in this group unless it’s some new innovative experiment. »

« A salute to a real hero. We need more and more people like you to develop new technologies so that we won’t be dependent on foreign technology. »

Wangchuk is the man on whom the character of Aamir Khan, Phunsuk Wangdu, was based on in the blockbuster 3 Idiots.

In 2018, Wangchuk, then 51, was recognised for « his uniquely systematic, collaborative and community-driven reform of learning systems in remote northern India, thus improving the life opportunities of Ladakhi youth, and his constructive engagement of all sectors in local society to harness science and culture creatively for economic progress, thus setting an example for minority peoples in the world, » the citation said as he was declared the winner of Ramon Magsaysay Award.

Earlier, with his Ice Stupa Project, Sonam Wangchuk and his team successfully created artificial glaciers by collecting water in Winters that helped local farmers in irrigation in springtime. Artificial glaciers are a unique way of water conservation in Ladakh. The horizontal ice formation is formed at very high-altitude locations that are above 4,000 metres from sea level. They need constant maintenance and a north-facing valley to shade the ice from the spring sun. These frozen sources hold the water that keeps flowing and wasting away down the streams and into the rivers throughout the winter.
