Former Irish international Alan McLoughlin has passed away at the age of only 54.

In late 2019, he was told that the cancer had spread to his remaining kidney, chest wall and lungs.

McLoughlin scored one of the most famous goals in of Irish football history when Ireland booked their spot at the 1994 World Cup with a draw with Northern Ireland at Windsor Park.

In a statement, FAI President Gerry McAnaney McLoughlin acknowledged: « Alan got in for this goal in Belfast 18 years ago To be remembered, a goal that got the whole country going.

« He was a great player for Ireland, a fantastic footballer who coached so many young players and a very proud family man.

The FAI and Irish fans remember the great Alan McLoughlin on that sad day for Irish football. We will always have that night in November. RIP Alan. pic.twitter.com/qIYj8kNI9E

« We were fortunate to have him as part of our Irish football family and I know I speak on behalf of everyone involved in Irish football when I meet Debbie at this most difficult time and sympathize with his family. «
