50 years ago, on the same day i.e. d. On March 6, 1971, a star like Sunil Gavaskar came to Indian cricket and it would have been amazing if Gavaskar had not been moved by these old memories! Speaking to the media on the eve of the golden jubilee of his international cricket debut, Gavaskar said, « If fans are introducing me to the ranks of Amitabh Bachchan and Kishore Kumar, I consider it my honor! »
Amitabh Bachchan’s films like Zanjeer, Deewar, Sholay, Trishul made a splash in the seventies, just like Kishore Kumar’s amazing singing has made a home in the minds of fans since the seventies. Coincidentally, Sunil Gavaskar’s golden age also remained in the same decade. Gavaskar was speaking on that background.
In that series against the West Indies in 1971, Gavaskar scored 774 runs and the career of the top batsman without a helmet continued to flourish. When Ajit Wadekar and Dilip Sardesai retired in 1974, he was never oppressed, Gavaskar recalled. « I would have been happy if I could have reached around 400 instead of 774 in my debut series, » he said, praising the West Indies fast bowlers. Gavaskar has never worn a helmet in his 17-year career. Because, he thought, the bouncer was just a chance to hit offensive shots.
