For the fourth time in the last seven days, the Ministry of Health (DOH) reported around 2,000 new coronavirus infections in one day. As of Thursday, January 14, 2021, the DOH recorded 1,912 newly confirmed cases, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 494,605.

It was the fourth time in seven days, January 8-14, that cases hit or hit nearly 2,000. The DOH reported 1,952 cases on January 9, 1,906 on January 10, and 2,052 cases on January 11. With 136 new infections, Davao City returned to the top of the list of cities and provinces with the highest number of cases in a single day. Quezon City (107), Agusan del Sur (61), Dagupan City (57) and Cavite (54) followed. Cebu City, which had the fifth highest number of infections on January 12th and 13th, stepped out of the top 5 list on Thursday. The country’s 2019 coronavirus disease (Covid-19) death rate remained at 1.97 percent as the DOH reported 40 more deaths on Thursday. There were 746 additional restores, bringing the total number of restores to 459,252 (92.9 percent). Of the total number of cases, 25,614 remained active. A total of 22,984 people were tested within 24 hours by noon January 13th of that number, 1,323, or 5.8 percent, were positive for Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. The DOH did not mention whether the first case of a B.1.1.7 variant in the Philippines was included in the case. The B.1.1.7, a Sars-CoV-2 variant first detected in England, was found in Swab samples detected from a 29-year-old Filipino man from Kamuning, Quezon City, who recently traveled to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
