Jaguar Formula E driver Sam Bird prevailed in a long duel with former teammate Robin Frijns and won a shortened second leg of the Diriyah E-Prix.

After Bird the Envision Virgin Racing Team after six seasons with the British team, he only won his second race appearance with Jaguar to continue his previous record of one win in every FE campaign.

Bird qualified third on the grid and immediately beat the slow Sergio Sette Camara’s Dragon Penske started when Frijns led the field from pole position.

The gap between Frijns and Bird remained stable at 0.5 seconds in the first half of the race. The Envision driver was able to bypass the Briton after falling behind him shortly after activating his attack mode.

After Frijns admitted via team radio that he needed to save energy, he saw a visible drop, so that Bird put him on lap 21 at turn 18 and took the lead of the race.

Behind them, DS Techeetah drivers Jean-Eric Vergne and Antonio Felix da Costa had made rapid progress after the seventh and ninth start on the grid and right at the end of Frijns’ Envision closed.

Vergne and da Costa, who originally worked together in each other’s attack modes, battled for the final podium on lap 23. Vergne was lucky enough to bypass the barrier on the outside of the last corner.

After escaping the incident without visible damage, neither of the two fighting Frijns could move anything after Maximilan Gunther was locked in turn 18 and the NIO 333 car from Tom Blomqvist.

Alex Lynn’s Mahindra later walked headlong over the corner in an incident that was not shown on the TV feed, and it likely led to the deployment of the safety car before that Race was three minutes ahead of the clock on the red flag.

Since the race was not restarted and the results were announced based on the order behind the safety car, Bird was crowned the winner ahead of Frijns. Vergne and da Costa finished third and fourth after their previous contact.

Nick Cassidy continued to impress on his first Formula E weekend and drove from tenth on the grid to fifth to finish as the best rookie. </ The two Dragon / Penske cars were able to stay in touch with the leaders at the start of the race before being overtaken by the two DS Techeetah cars and Cassidy's Envision entry. Sette Camara and Nico Muller finished sixth and seventh respectively.

This still meant a massive increase in performance for the team, which only scored two points throughout the 2019/20 season.

Oliver Rowland, again the top qualifier from the first quarter was ninth in the only remaining Nissan after teammate Sebastien Buemi stalled on the track shortly before the clash between Gunther and Blomqvist that brought the end of the race.

Rene Rast, who did not set a lap time in qualifying finished 10th for Audi ahead of Mahindras Alexander Sims.

Sims teammate Lynn was taken to hospital for an examination after his crash towards the end of the race and the British driver is conscious and talks.

None of the vehicles with a Mercedes drive made it into the top 10 after the FIA excluded participation in qualifying after Edoardo Mortara fell in free practice After the race winner Nyck de Vries received permission to take part in the race on Friday after software changes, he finished 14th at the leading plant in Mercedes, one place ahead of Venturi’s Norman Nato.

Stoffel Vandoorne was the last of the classified finishers in 18th place after receiving a stop / go penalty for a technical breach.
