Linfield is on the verge of winning another league title after losing 3-1 to Crusaders at Windsor Park on Tuesday night.

The Blues are eight points ahead of the top of the table, with nine points remaining to play with victory in their next game, enough to secure the Gibson Cup for the 55th time.

David Healy’s side led at half-time through Mark Stafford’s opening goal after fifteen minutes when he bonded with Kirk Millar’s corner to spin the ball home on the back post.

However, Crusaders equalized early in the second half thanks to a close-range shot from Ben Kennedy high into the net.

But just before the hour, Linfield regained the advantage. Niall Quinn sent over a deep corner that Stafford tapped in the gate hole to get Shayne Lavery to nod past Johnny Tuffey.

And they made for the points six minutes from time after Joel Cooper scored a third goal from a few meters away after Cameron Palmer delivered the decisive ball.

After the game, Blues boss Healy admitted that the Northern Irish National player Lavery is expected to leave in the summer. The former Everton player will continue his career across the water.

Linfield: Johns, Stafford, Haughey, Callacher, Stewart, Millar, Lavery, Fallon, Mulgrew, Quinn, Cooper Subs Moore, Waterworth, Manzinga, Nasseri, Clarke, Pfeffer, Palmer

Crusaders: Tuffey, Burns, Kennedy, Cushley, Caddell, Forsythe, Ruddy, Owens, R. Clarke, Larmour, A. Clarke and Shields, Lowry, O’Rourke, Lecky, Thompson, Logan, Patterson

The closest rivals The Blues, Coleraine and Glentoran shared the booty at The Oval, so the battle for second place – and automatic European qualification – continues.
