Marcelo Bielsa said it would be better for Leeds to wait until the end of the season before deciding whether to renew his contract.

But Bielsa, who signed a one-year extension in September after Leeds won promotion to the Premier League, insisted it didn’t mean he wanted to leave Elland Road.

« The first thing I want to highlight because it seems that the president is offering me an extension and I’m delaying it, » said Bielsa.

« It could be interpreted to mean that the club wants me to stay more than I do, and that’s not the case. »

« I do not want to position myself in any way over the club. I repeat, I will not manage any other options until my job is done here in Leeds. There is no speculation on my part. »

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani has made it clear that Bielsa should stay in the role and that the club has been waiting for the Argentine’s decision.

Bielsa added: « Second, the decision to work at a club for another year is so important that you need to have a clear certainty.

» When you have a third of the season to play, things may happen during this time that will change judgment, which is useful. This is my reasoning.

« If the club needs an answer before the end of the season, I will reply before the end of the season.

» But when that happens I will take the time to tell you to think about the last part of the season. «

Leeds, who host Southampton tonight, are 12th in the table after Bielsa led them back into the Premier League for the first time in 16 years.
